Eight students from Ponte Vedra High School (PVHS) and Landrum Middle School attended the 14th annual Florida Statewide Chinese Competition (FSCC) March 15-16 in Miami.
Led by PVHS teacher Yan Li, the students participated in two days of tests, games and culture activities to further their knowledge of the Chinese language and culture.
Ranging from sixth to 12th grade, the students arrived in Miami on a Friday night ready for a rigorous game of “Jeopardy” played by three students from PVHS. The competition team engaged in multiple months of practice in preparation for the game. Finishing with a total of 1,200 points against three other high schools and correctly answering the “Final Jeopardy” question, their knowledge of geography, historical figures, festivals and various dates paid off. Friday night concluded with a banquet dinner and culture performances put on by other students and speakers of the language.
On Saturday, all academic competitions took place. Students Sophie Barley (11) and Grace Nuri (9) participated in Level One. Hope Daughtry (10) and Maggie Dykstra (9) participated in Level Two. Hayden Hulihan (12) and Elizabeth Ewalt (6) participated in Level Three. Chris Cavaliere (12) and Maddi Paxton (11) participated in Level Four. All levels competed in speaking, reading and writing categories, putting their knowledge to the test.
PVHS has attended this competition since 2012 and is the only high school in St. Johns County to attend each year. The Chinese program at PVHS, run by Yan Li, allows students to learn Chinese from Levels 1-5 and at the AP level. Those who are dedicated to this Chinese program have the option of joining National Chinese Honor Society, which meets every month to partake in cultural activities and competitions, such as FSCC.
