Marsh Landing residents held their first-ever mahjong charity event to fight breast cancer on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The evening kicked off the first of a trio of events benefiting Pink Ribbon Jax.
Marsh Landing Tournament Chair Wendy Waller and the rest of the Pink Ribbon Jax volunteers organized a lovely evening of mahjong for an important cause.
“It is a crazy fun game that brings a lot of women — varying ages — together. Playing for a purpose is much sweeter,” Waller said.
Attendees enjoyed laughing and learning around the table. There was a delicious dinner, raffle prizes, awards and lots of stunning mahjong boards and tiles to admire.
Pink Ribbon Jax strives to help more women have access to life-saving breast imaging and patient care services, in addition to funding local cancer research; 100% of the proceeds from Mahjong for Mammos were donated to the cause.
Betsy Fredeking, a recent breast cancer survivor, is very grateful to be part of such a wonderful community and learned how to play mahjong last week to support the cause.
Fredeking’s cancer was detected early because she went to the doctor after discovering a lump. She encourages other women to make an appointment if they suspect anything is wrong and keep up with routine appointments. Even if other people are dismissive, it is so important to advocate for yourself, she said.
Ultimately, Fredeking is thankful for the support she received from family and friends and the sense of community she has experienced from Pink Ribbon Jax. She wants to support them in any way she can. It’s a very inspiring cause, she said.
As the night wound down, prizes were awarded and everyone walked away knowing that they had used their love of mahjong to support an amazing cause.
The next event, Tennis for Tatas, is already sold out. There are still a few spots left for the final event, Golf for the Girls, on Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To learn more and purchase tickets, go to https://givebutter.com/mlcc26.
