Newcomers Alumnae group holds annual holiday luncheon

Christmas and all the trappings came early for the Newcomers Alumnae group this year.  On Dec. 2, Newcomers Alumnae held their annual Christmas/Holiday luncheon at Marsh Landing Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Before lunch, member Katie McGuigan read, “How Murray Saved Christmas” by Mike Reiss, a hilarious Emmy-nominated Christmas story from the writer and producer of “The Simpsons.”

Newcomers Alumnae members then feasted on a holiday lunch of tomato bisque, chicken or grouper, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, rolls, and cheesecake with cherry sauce. The lunch was topped off with a prosecco toast to ring in the holidays.

After lunch, member Dede Leclaire hosted a trivia game, which covered popular Christmas songs, movies and traditions.  Each table was a team.  The first three tables to win for first, second and third place were awarded gifts from Peterbrooke Chocolatier.  Many beautifully-wrapped giveaways were also handed out from Chico’s, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Hobby Lobby, Dollar Store, Mary Kay Cosmetics plus four free sessions at Gray Wulf Therapeutics of Ponte Vedra Beach.

Newcomers Alumnae will hold a Happy Hour at Pusser’s Caribbean Bar & Grille from 5-7 p.m.  Dec. 17.  On Jan. 6, Dr. Melanie Williams will be the guest speaker at the monthly luncheon from 11 a.m-1:30 p.m. at Marsh Landing Country Club. Williams is the principal for the new charter school Cornerstone Academy on Saint Johns Bluff Road in Jacksonville.

Board president Maria Woodford closed the holiday luncheon thought-provoking words.

“Regardless of where our guiding star may lead us, and whether we will be able to share a glass of cheer at this Christmas holiday event in person or not, we remain united as a club and look forward to the day our ship reaches the shores of our home port,” she said.
