The Ocean Palms Elementary School (OPES) community was awarded for having the most registrants at the recent CHARACTER COUNTS! race in St. Augustine.

The Ponte Vedra school enrolled 121 registrants and consequently received a cash donation. According to Press Parent Susan Samko, the money the school community won will be used to fund Character Counts initiatives at OPES. The school received the same award at the race last year. OPES, Samko added, also received praise after the school’s choir collaborated with Landrum Middle School to sing the national anthem.

Beginning and ending at Palencia Elementary School, the race/walk was held Feb. 3 and included a 6K and 3K. The course took runners through the neighborhoods of Kensington and Las Calinas.

This event is produced by the CHARACTER COUNTS! Steering Committee and is presented by Beaver Toyota with support from businesses and community groups. The SJCSD, along with area businesses, youth organizations and civic groups, selected the national character education program of CHARACTER COUNTS! as a countywide initiative to instill positive character traits in young people throughout the county.
