Days after Hurricane Dorian swept the Atlantic and drilled the Bahamas, Ponte Vedra local Marzen Mignone teamed up with Jimbo Stockton and his Adventures in God’s Creation foundation to host a hurricane relief drive Sept. 5 and 6.
When Mignone got a call from Stockton, asking to help with hurricane relief, she didn't hesitate.
“I posted on Facebook and said I was going to be at the Winn-Dixie shopping center for anyone to drop off their own supplies,” Mignone said.
Mignone started with one UHaul truck to fill, but after the first day, she ended up with five.
“It was just crazy. I woke up the next morning and I had 350 people share my post,” she said. “I had never driven a 26-foot truck before, but I definitely have now.”
Mignone’s trucks will be at the shopping center until 5:30 p.m. She and volunteers are asking those donating to bring towels, blankets, underwear shoes, formula, first-aid kits, plastic bin containers with lids and power bars.
“Power bars are the easiest way to get food to people,” she said. “We all expected this hurricane to come here and we prepared. Now, we don’t need all that, but the Bahamas were obviously a lot less fortunate.”
Mignone is amazed and thankful for the community’s support. When asked if she was working for an organization, she shook her head.
“I’m just a mom,” she said. “It’s truly the community coming together and helping out.”
