Registration is still open for the St. Johns County Parks & Recreation Department’s 2018 Just Tri It! Kids Triathlon on Sunday, April 15.
This non-competitive event, which will be held at the Solomon Calhoun Center in St. Augustine, gives everyone the opportunity to participate in a triathlon. All children currently enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade are welcome to participate. Races incorporate swimming, biking and running, and vary in distance by age group. Registration closes Saturday, April 14 at 3 p.m. The event also features a free Tot Trot 100-yard dash for children ages 5 and under. Registration for that activity can be done April 14 and 15 at the Solomon Calhoun Center.
General registration is $30 until April 13, with each additional child from the same family costing $15. Late registration on April 14-15 will be $40, with each additional child from the same family costing $20.
With each athlete registration, parents must include one of the following to prove the child is a proficient swimmer: USA Swimming team name and head coach's email address or phone number; previous triathlon experience, with details concerning the name and date of the most recent event; and a photocopy of a YMCA swim test card, which is available at any YMCA location. No child who must be assisted during the swimming portion will be allowed to compete in the triathlon.
Parents are responsible for supplying their kids with bike helmets, swim goggles, sunscreen and anything else they need for the event. Training wheels on bikes will not be permitted, and parents are not allowed to assist their kids on the course at any time.
The first heat of the triathlon begins at 8:30 a.m. on April 15. The first 150 children to pick up their race packets will get a Just Tri It! tee shirt, and every child that completes the race will get a medal for his/her accomplishment. Early packet pickup for the triathlon is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 14 at the Solomon Calhoun Center. Visit http://www.sjcfl.us/Recreation/Youth/JustTriIt.aspx for more information and to register.
