Rival schools join forces to clean up beach, raise awareness

Rivals Nease High School and Ponte Vedra High School came together Saturday, Nov. 21, to help the environment.

The two schools' Beaches Go Green clubs had a friendly contest where more than 70 students volunteered to clean up Mickler Beach and to raise awareness of the waste in the oceans.

Several bags of trash were collected along with several large items.

"We recognize that keeping the beach clean is important,” said Zoe Kurtz, co-president of Nease Beaches Go Green. “However, it's more important for us to be educated and to change our habits by creating less waste for future generations. Plastic pollution is something that really scares my friends and I. We love the beach and ocean and want to keep it clean and healthy."

This clean-up is one of many collaborative efforts between the two schools' Beaches Go Green clubs.

The main purpose of the Beaches Go Green student clubs is to create environmental awareness and education among their peers and to teach younger students as well.
