Skimboarding tournament planned at Vilano Beach

The 31st Annual Florida Skimboarding Pro/Am Tournament takes place on Vilano Beach from Friday, Aug. 22, through Sunday, Aug. 24.

“It’s all about skimboarding, from sunrise to sunset,” said Steve Pullara, founder and event director. “We’ll have top-ranking professionals and an array of amateurs facing off on the waves. Our competitors range from 8 years old to over 40, with men’s and women’s divisions. It’s awesome to see the heart they put into their runs. And it’s a chance for spectators to see some of the best athletes competing in the sport. It brings together everything I love – the sport, the community and Vilano.”

Registration is available through Aug. 21 for the tournament, which allows amateur athletes two attempts to advance before being eliminated. This creates a more laid-back atmosphere and encourages growth amongst newer competitors.

The competition divisions include: ages 8 and younger, 9-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-21, 22-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40 and older, girls 14 and younger, women 15 and older, women’s pro and men’s pro.

Spectators are encouraged to attend the Pro/Am, with its family-friendly environment, tons of action and opportunities to capture one-of-a-kind photos.

Stay the weekend and enjoy a variety of lodging options and amenities close by. There are lodging discounts available for tournament participants at the Hampton Inn & Suites on Vilano Beach and St. Augustine Beach House, which overlooks the beach where the tournament is staged.

The Hyatt Place Vilano Beach and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Vilano Beach are also within walking distance.

The Ponte Vedra Resorts are just a short drive north, and there are additional lodging choices available in St. Augustine. Casual dining is available on the Intracoastal Waterway at Aunt Kate’s on the River and Cap’s on the Water, oceanfront at The Reef, and Pesca offers rooftop cocktails and bites with ocean views from atop the Hyatt Place.
