STEM field trips "take flight" at iFLY Jacksonville

Imagine being a student again, stuck at a desk with an open textbook and looking out the window, daydreaming for adventure. To be fair, that’s not far off from adulthood, either. Learning in classrooms can be mundane, but with iFLY’s STEM-related field trips, learning can “take flight” into an unforgettable, educational experience.

“STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — is so much more than just sitting in your traditional classrooms or just having a book in front of you,” iFLY Jacksonville Director of Sales and Marketing Vanessa Williams said. “The STEM job markets are not being fulfilled as they should be, so we try to find ways to let the youth of today know there’s a lot of fun things that can go behind it and a lot of fun job opportunities.”

Designed by STEM professionals and teachers, according to iFLY’s official website, the first half of the curriculum educates students on STEM-related topics, followed by a hands-on lab activity, correlating with each lesson and grade level.

Afterward, iFLY instructors put a variety of objects within the vertical wind tunnel and discuss how the objects interact inside.

For the finale, students can take part in the experience of body flight.

iFLY Jacksonville offers STEM field trips for all ages and learning levels, including those with physical and cognitive challenges, who will each have a specially trained flight instructor and accommodations based on each situation.

Curious adults are welcome, too.

“If there’s a group of adults that want to come and learn, I’m sure I can whip something up that’s totally age-appropriate and fun,” Williams said, furthering the cause that STEM can truly be for anyone and everyone.
