A Pennsylvania man remained in critical condition Friday afternoon after being shot during a shootout and standoff with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.
Richard Bonsell, 28, fired a shotgun at a sheriff’s office deputy, before retreating back to his pickup truck. Following a brief standoff, deputies fired tear gas into the truck before finding him with “traumatic” wounds. It’s not clear whether the injuries were from deputies or self-inflicted.
Bonsell was reported missing in Lewistown, Pennsylvania on April 17 after he told friends and family he was going fishing. According to the Lewistown Police Department, Bonsell was still in Lewistown on April 19. Police then reported him missing on Monday on its social media page, saying, “He was reported to have a fishing rod with him and he was riding his bicycle.”
Two days later, SJCSO deputy Cameron Coward spotted a Toyota Tundra pick-up truck in the Publix parking lot in Sawgrass Village. Bonsell reportedly shot at Coward as he approached the truck. Coward was able to return fire, according to SJCSO.
Bonsell remains at UF Health Jacksonville.
