The Ponte Vedra Sharks football season came to an end on Dec. 5 when they lost 40-13 to the Lakeland Dreadnaughts. This was the Sharks’ lowest scoring game of the season.
Turnovers and missed opportunities plagued the Sharks all night but ultimately the speed of the Dreadnaughts proved to be too much to handle.
Ponte Vedra won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Sharks almost forced a three and out, but a personal foul penalty kept the Dreadnaughts’ drive alive. Lakeland went on to score making it 6-0 early in the game. With the Sharks trailing 6-0 they stopped the Dreadnaughts on a fourth and short to take over possession. They looked like they might score but a rare fumble, only the third of the season, again turned the ball over inside the Lakeland 20-yard line.
Shortly thereafter came the game’s biggest play and the fatal blow for the Sharks. Lakeland quarterback Kellen Hendricks carried the ball for a 76-yard touchdown completely blowing past the Ponte Vedra secondary.
The Sharks tried to get something going on a deep drive but had to settle for a 41-yard field goal by Noah Ash with only 1:24 remaining in the half.
Trailing by a large margin, the Sharks went to the air for much of the second half. Quarterback Cole Rosendahl threw for 288 yards and one touchdown. One of Rosendahl’s throws found Jack Berquist in the end zone to complete a 17-yard touchdown play, the only touchdown scored on the night by the Sharks. Berquist picked up 120 receiving yards in the game.
Talan Babin played a solid game for the Sharks with 16 tackles in his last game. JP Dolan also had a strong game with two blocked kicks on the night.
