Vicar’s Landing Retirement Community in Ponte Vedra presented scholarships for more than $315,000 to its student employees this year. Awards of $2,500 to $5,250 were given to assist with education, including to two daughters of employees.

Scholarships are used for expenses related to college, trade schools, English as a second language, nursing school and others.

Martine Slemp, chair of the scholarship committee, announced the amount to the membership, and thanked her committee: Carolee Bertisch, Sue Foley, Jim Marx, Jim Munsonn, Laurie Reeves and Jim Van Vleck.

A substantial portion of the funding comes from generous donations by Vicar’s members, associate members and others. For this past year, donations were made by friends and relatives of the following members, who designated the Scholarship Funds as their memorial: Ralph Chilton, Walter Goetz, Bud Roemhild, John Slemp and Van MacDonald.

Contributions were also received in memory of Dean Beckwith, George Bockmeyer, Charles Gamble, Admiral David Frost, Mary Hoban, Mary Linden, Charlotte Miller, Betsy Mills, Ron Giddens, Joy Ward and Mary Emma Wilson.

Vicar’s Landing Boutique, although restricted by COVID from holding a sale open to the public, earned more than $50,000 through sales to residents and donated to the fund. Committee members were: Rose Murdock, Ginny Elliot, Sue Foley, Kay Zolezzi, Sherrie Russell, Wanda Keyser, Sandra Burnaman and Jean Cowell.

Scholarship winners received certificates and brochures honoring them.
