As Idalia approaches, include roof inspection in storm preparations

As Tropical Storm Idalia strengthens, local homeowners should consider checking their roofs as part of their storm preparations.

“Now is the time for residents to make sure there are no existing issues that could be exacerbated by a major storm,” said Jim Jessup, owner of Jacksonville’s Ready Roofing. “A little preparation can go a long way to ensuring your home can withstand a severe storm.”

Step one: Repair any existing leaks.

“If your roof has a minor leak now, that’s a sign that there may be more extensive damage up there that will only get worse when subjected to hurricane-force winds,” Jessup said. “Repairing a small leak now could save you from spending a lot more money on post-storm major repairs.”

Having your roof resealed is another option that could provide some additional protection during hurricane season.

“Resealing can fix any existing leaks and extend the life of your roof for a fraction of the cost of a total roof replacement,” Jessup said. “It’s also much less invasive, causing less debris and inconvenience for the homeowner.”

So, what should homeowners do if their roof does sustain storm damage? Jessup recommends the following:

Get an inspection: “If your home is less than five years old, it should be under warranty and the contractors should perform an inspection at no charge,” said Jessup, noting that Ready Roofing provides free inspections for all homes. “A professional roofing company will check for things like leaks around your kitchen, bathroom and laundry vent pipes, nail protrusions and other damage.”

Get an inspection letter: Proof of a professional roof inspection could reduce your insurance premiums regardless of whether you decide to repair or replace your roof.

Consider getting a wind mitigation report: Homeowners who live in hurricane-prone areas such as Florida can reduce their insurance premiums by anywhere from 10% to 30% by getting a wind mitigation report.

If your roof needs major repairs or replacing, Ready Roofing’s Jessup suggests homeowners look for a local, established roofing company that is fully insured and licensed in the state of Florida. Homeowners can also check to see if the company’s license has any issues or complaints associated with it.

“Replacing a roof can cost anywhere from $12,000 to $20,000 depending on a variety of factors, including the size and age of the home and roof,” Jessup said, adding that some roofing companies offer financing. “Our company offers a number of financing programs, including some government-funded options that provide matching funds that can reduce significantly the cost to the homeowner.”
