Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside expands maternal care

Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside is expanding its maternal care services by adding six new labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) rooms. These units will supplement the 17 already on campus.

This growth project has been made possible by a $5 million gift to the Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation from Mary Virginia Terry. In honor of the donation, the new unit will be named the C. Herman & Mary Virginia Terry Labor and Delivery Suites.

By adding these LDRP rooms, St. Vincent’s Southside is providing greater access to care to children and families in the community. These rooms improve the birthing experience by allowing moms, babies and families to experience the entire labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum phases in the comfort of one space.

Other improvements involved with the project include smaller renovations to the units and equipment improvements.

“Our care teams are committed to supporting mothers during their unique birthing experience,” said St. Vincent’s Southside President James Machado. “We are excited to expand our capacity to meet the growing needs of our community and provide excellent care for women in Northeast Florida.”

St. Vincent’s Southside delivers nearly 260 babies per month, offering resources like lactation consultants every day of the week and providing wireless fetal monitoring in the LDRP rooms. Other maternal health resources offered at St. Vincent’s care sites include:

  • 24/7 OB emergency care
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Childbirth classes
  • Labor, delivery and postpartum care
  • Midwifery services
  • Neonatal intensive care
  • Maternal-fetal medicine specialty care

In addition, the entire labor and delivery department was honored with the hospital's first team DAISY award — a national recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families and co-workers.

This award was earned due to Dr. Meena Demetrios and the labor-and-delivery care team's actions in saving Alex Mosiello's life during pregnancy complications.
