Pitcher Evan Heffner has been a standout for Maryville College.

The Ponte Vedra High School graduate received Pitcher of the Week honors during consecutive weeks in February.

The USA South Athletic Conference named him Pitcher of the Week Feb 27. The junior left-hander was recognized for earning a win in his lone appearance of the week before. He allowed five hits and struck out seven in eight innings against conference foe Piedmont College.

The conference recognized him Feb. 20 after he earned a complete-game victory against MacMurray College in his only outing that week. He gave up four hits and no earned runs. He struck out seven.

In addition, the Tennessee Sports Writers Association named him Pitcher of the Week for his effort against MacMurray.

Entering Sunday's action, Heffner had a 2-3 record and 3.35 earned run average in eight appearances. He struck out a team-high 33 in a team-high 43 innings.

 

Men’s lacrosse

Catawba College senior Ryan Applegate was the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference defensive player of the week March 20. The goalie out of Ponte Vedra High made 13 saves and allowed five goals in a conference win over Mars Hill College. As of Sunday, he led the conference in saves and ranked fifth in save percentage. He had a 5-5 record in 10 starts.

Catawba midfielder Dalton Cook ranked second on the team, with 23 points through 10 games. The Bartram Trail graduate had 19 goals and four assists.

 

Women’s gymnastics

Allen D. Nease alumna Rachel Reis was named Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week March 1. The Bowling Green State University senior was acknowledged after posting a career-best 9.875 to win the uneven bars event against Central Michigan University.

 

Women’s tennis

University of Florida junior Josie Kuhlman had a 15-3 open singles record and an 8-4 open doubles record to begin Sunday. The Ponte Vedra resident has been playing at third and fourth singles, and second and third doubles.
