16-year-old fencer Lawrence “Lance” Tan of Ponte Vedra recently returned from a month of competing on the Asian Cadet Circuit (ACC), winning gold at the first Asian Cadet Circuit tournament held July 8-17, in Manila, Philippines.
Tan beat competitors from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Brunei and others in the Asia/Oceania region. As a result, he earned the distinction of being ranked the No. 1 cadet foil fencer in Asia. The Asian Cadet Circuit competitions are sanctioned by the Fencing Confederation of Asia and the Federation Internationale d’Escrime.
Following the ACC event, Tan continued his winning streak, earning team silver and two team bronze medals at the Southeast Asian Pacific Championships. After a brief break, Tan headed to Singapore, winning bronze at the second ACC event July 29-30.
Tan recently returned to Ponte Vedra.
“I am so happy to be home,” he said. “I love training in California, and I enjoy traveling around the world and competing, but it’s always nice to sleep in my own bed and spend time with my family and friends here.”
After a short break, Tan will return to California to prepare for the U.S. national and European competition season. Tan currently trains at Golubitsky Fencing Center in Orange County, California, under coach Sergei Golubitsky, who is an Olympic silver medalist, three-time world champion, and five-time World Cup overall champion.
