60 years of marriage: a heartwarming story

Recently, residents of Starling at Ponte Vedra and their families came together to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of Pat and George Ryan. The evening featured a special dinner, live music by Robbie performing their song “More” and a special cake to mark this incredible milestone.

Pat and George Ryan worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 1963, located in the financial district. George grew up in Long Island and Pat in the city. Their first date was at the Blue Spruce Inn at the end of October, where he took her to dinner. They both worked on the seventh floor and first met near the coffee area.

Pat’s first impression was that George was handsome, intelligent and someone she wanted to get to know better. George’s first impression was that he was attracted to Pat and sensed that they both shared a mutual interest in getting to know each other.

Pat shared that one evening, while they were at the Golden, George asked her if she wanted to get married — and they both happily said yes. They became engaged around Presidents’ Day in February 1965 and were married that October.

George admired Pat’s personality, and since they worked in the same department, they often found ways to spend time together — whether it was getting coffee or finding small excuses to see each other throughout the day.

When asked about the secret to being happily married for 60 years, they both agreed that communication, commitment, love and patience are the keys. They are also deeply grateful for their three sons, who have brought them great joy and pride.

Some of their favorite memories were the births of their children, as well as traveling to South America, visiting Chile, Argentina and Brazil. They followed a young tour guide who was energetic and outgoing, and Pat enjoyed practicing her Spanish throughout the trip.

Though there are some things they can no longer do together due to illness and age, one thing that has never changed is the love they have for each other. They continue to enjoy sharing lunch and dinner together, and remain a strong, loving family who can always rely on one another.

Their advice for a lasting marriage is to “hang in there.” George says patience is important when challenges arise, and don’t give up too quickly. Work through issues together with understanding and care.

Their greatest accomplishment, they both agree, has been building a beautiful family and raising three wonderful sons.
