Beachside students learn from health care leaders

Ascension St. Vincent's St. Johns County is inspiring the next generation of health care leaders.

Students from the Biomedical Sciences Academy at Beachside High School spent the day at the hospital recently. They learned about different careers in health care and participated in several interactive sessions, including CPR, imaging, orthopedics and more.

“I think it's really exciting to see all of these nurses and doctors and medical professionals walking by here,” said Alyssa, a student in the program. “So, I can’t wait to learn more about this stuff and hopefully find my own career here.”

Dr. Philip Rothberg, a general surgeon at the hospital, shared his personal story and career path with the students and answered questions.

“It means so much more to be here today, to give them this experience than it could ever be behind their desk or in a classroom setting,” said Kendra Stone, program director for the Beachside High School Biomedical Sciences Academy.

The school and hospital have collaborated to share this hands-on experience with students since the hospital opened in 2022.
