Challah Bake to support, honor women affected by breast cancer

In honor of the Donna Weekend, Chabad at the Beaches is hosting a Great Pink Challah Bake to support, honor and remember those affected by breast cancer in the community. This women’s event will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at Chabad at the Beaches, 521 A1A North, Ponte Vedra.

Participants will bake challah and listen to motivating speakers, enjoying a ladies’ night out filled with camaraderie and togetherness. Whether or not they are personally affected by breast cancer, women from the community can show their support by simply attending.

Featuring engaging stories from breast cancer survivors and those with breast cancer in their lives, the challah bake will combine the mitzvah of challah with education and awareness for women of all ages.

Part of this engagement will be dedicated to understanding proactive health options for women of all risk factors.

Leah Kurinsky, co-director of Chabad at the Beaches, wants this event to show the community that no one should feel isolated while fighting breast cancer.

With profits from the event and a team of dedicated volunteers, she hopes to form a support and resource group for families in the Beaches community affected by cancer, with such offerings as social visits and care packages. She envisions that this group would fill a gap in community and health care support by providing a personalized, human connection.

Kurinsky notes that in traditional Jewish thought, the gates of heaven open at certain times — one of these times is when a woman makes the blessing on the challah. This makes a challah bake an opportune time to pray for those who need help or healing, and everyone will be invited to put forth a name of someone who needs the prayer for healing.

In addition, challah is a mitzvah designated for women, and a way to come together to fight a disease that primarily affects women.
