COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center announces May schedule

The following programs will be held at COA’s THE PLAYERS Community Senior Center, 175 Landrum Lane, Ponte Vedra Beach, beginning in May 2025. Most classes are four weeks long and begin May 1. Please note: The center will be closed on Thursday, May 15, due to a special event. If you have any questions, call the center at 904-209-3659. Lunch — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, May 6, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration is required a week in advance and the required fee is $5 per meal due upon arrival.

Lunch — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Thursday, May 1, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration is required a week in advance and the required fee is $5 per meal due upon arrival.

Duplicate Bridge: Five weeks starting Friday, May 2, from noon to 3 p.m. Required fee is $2 per person, per Friday. You must have a partner and experience to play.

Line Dance Class: Instructor Will Oglesby teaches you many different line dances to a variety of upbeat music. Open to all adults and experience levels. Four weeks starting Wednesday, May 7, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Fee required is $9 per class or $37.50 per month (includes months with five weeks).

Tap Dance Class: Instructor Ginny Wirzbicki brings much experience to this style of dance and encourages all levels to participate or learn. Five weeks starting Friday, May 2, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fee required is $6.25 per class or $25 per month (includes months with five weeks).

Hisshin Sumi-E Painting Class: Traditional East Asian Brush Painting. This class typically meets the second Thursday of every month (except July/August) and is scheduled on May 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fee required is $3 per person.

Acrylic Painting: Four weeks starting Wednesday, May 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No fee required. Instructor on site Wednesday, May 14.

Caregiver Support Group (Free Program): The group is open to all adult caregivers. Meets the first Wednesday of each month. Next date is Wednesday, May 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Register with the Alzheimer’s Association at 800-272-3900.

Chair Exercise — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, May 6, from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Canasta — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Mexican Train Dominoes: Four weeks starting Tuesday, May 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Bingo — Tuesdays: Four weeks starting Tuesday, May 6, 1-2 p.m. Fee is $1 per card

Bingo — Thursdays: Four weeks starting Thursday, May 1, 1-2 p.m. Fee is $1 per card

Social Bridge: Four weeks starting Wednesday, May 7, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Let’s Play Board Games: Rummikub, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Cards and more! Enjoy socializing and making new friends while participating in some friendly competition; four weeks starting Wednesday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Wii Bowling: Four weeks starting Thursday, May 1, 10-11:00 a.m.

Computer Room: Available Tuesdays through Fridays during open hours; General assistance available

Ballroom Basics: Beginning this month! Join instructor Scott Adkins who will show you the basic steps of ballroom dance (waltz, foxtrot, rumba). No partner is needed; however, comfortable shoes are a must (leather soles are best). Ballroom Dance has been proven to be one of the best activities to promote brain health. Five Fridays beginning on May 2, from noon to 1 p.m.

“Honey, Do Honey!” You asked for them and now they’re back! Join June and Dennis Hill for a special two-hour bee presentation. Learn about, sample and purchase some of the area’s best honey and teas. Thursday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to noon.

“Ears to You” with Dr. Christine Kent: Your hearing success is a priority with Dr. Kent, who is here to promote the most quality of life through better hearing. She will speak about hearing loss and hearing aids on Tuesday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Happy Birthday May Babies: Entertainer Gary Coulliette sings some of his new music as we celebrate our very special May-born members! Come enjoy some birthday cake and “Fun Music by Gary” on Thursday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Feeding NEFL: Soft or liquid diets don’t have to be discouraging. Let’s have some fun getting creative with nutritious smoothies! Beth Verlinde with Feeding Northeast Florida will give us ideas on fun flavors and healthy add-ins for easy yet flavorful blender creations! Tuesday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to noon.

“The Claire Project” Learn practical ways to prevent falls from this groundbreaking documentary.  Kris Wilson, occupational therapist and owner of Modified Independence, presents ways to modify your home for safer living. Tuesday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Food Pantry Hosted by CarePlus: Medicare sales rep Nelson Correa will provide fresh fruits and vegetables as he explains why eating a “rainbow of color” is important to our health. These will make great “add-ins” to last week’s smoothie recipes! Thursday, May 22, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Picnic Day and Costume Jewelry Exchange: Wear your red, white and blue in honor of our fallen heroes with a “Kick-Off to Summer” picnic! Come enjoy our beautiful outdoor spaces and play a little corn toss, shuffleboard and putting on the green. Ladies, a new season is approaching and it’s time for a change! Bring your costume jewelry and exchange it for something different. Tuesday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

St. John’s County Legal Aid: “How to Avoid Becoming Victim to Predatory Lending” will be presented by Megan Wall, managing attorney for St. Johns County Legal Aid. Come take advantage of this important lecture and bring your questions on Thursday, May 29, from 11 a.m. to noon.
