The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida has announced that Joseph DePorre and Mason Romero are the 2020 and 2021 recipients of the Craig Speziale Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship recognizes a Ponte Vedra High graduating senior who demonstrates academic excellence, school leadership, community service and the “Spirit of Spez.”

The 2020 scholarship was not awarded last year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the committee decided to award 2020 and 2021 jointly this year.

DePorre graduated fourth in his class. As a scholar athlete, he served as varsity captain for the men’s basketball team, was a member of the National Honor Societies as well as a member of the math, science, English, Hispanic and history honor societies. He was active in the Hi-Q team and Ultimate Frisbee. He completed more than 200 community service hours and is currently attending Notre Dame University.

Romero is also a scholar athlete. He played football all four years and was the starting cornerback for the 2019 Ponte Vedra Shark District Championship team. He was a well-rounded student active in service to school and community. He founded the Sharks for Heroes club, which supports local military organizations. He was a member of National Honor Society, Math Honor and Science Honor. He plans to attend University of Florida in the fall.
