Tell us about your practice, Ponte Vedra Spine Center.
At Ponte Vedra Spine Center, what we want is pretty straightforward. We help people get out of pain and back to doing the things they love. We’re a corrective chiropractic practice here in Ponte Vedra Beach, and we care for everyone from young athletes and weekend warriors to busy parents and retirees who just want to stay active. On any given day, that might mean someone with stubborn back or neck pain, sciatica, a herniated disc or scoliosis, migraines, a sports injury or whiplash after a car accident. We treat expecting moms and kids, too.
What I care about most is finding the actual cause of someone’s pain. We measure what’s going on with their spine using X-rays, if necessary, a thorough examination and posture analysis, then build a plan around that one person rather than running everyone through the same routine. I always tell patients, you can’t improve what you can’t measure.
What I’m most proud of, though, is the relationships we’ve built with our patients. Watching someone get their mobility, confidence and quality of life back is what makes this work so rewarding.
Tell us about your background, especially as it applies to your career.
I've always been drawn to health and to helping people live better. My own path into chiropractic actually started when I was serving in the U.S. Navy.
During my time in the military, I dealt with significant musculoskeletal injuries and headaches. Chiropractic care played a major role in my recovery. It helped me avoid surgery and a long-term reliance on medication. Experiencing those results firsthand had a profound impact on me, and it inspired me to build a career where I could help others the same way I’d been helped.
Before the Navy, I studied exercise physiology at Ohio University, which is a big part of why movement and corrective exercise are so central to how I treat people today. I went on to earn my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University in Marietta, Georgia, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude. Even now, I’m still learning. Health care is always evolving, and I think it’s important to keep studying and improving so I can give my patients the best possible care.
What do you like best about what you do?
Easily the best part is seeing people get their lives back. Someone comes in unable to play sports, exercise, pick up their kids or even sleep through the night, and a few weeks later, they’re doing all of it again. That never gets old.
I also love the relationships that build over time. A lot of what we do is taking the time to really explain what’s going on, so people understand their own bodies and their plan. When you’ve cared for someone for a while, and they start sending in their spouse, their kids, their parents, that tells you something. It means they trust you with the people they love.
What is a typical day like for you?
The day usually starts early. I spend most of it with patients, evaluating new cases, reviewing X-rays and posture scans, treating people and talking through their health goals. Every day is a little different, which keeps it interesting. One hour I might be helping someone recover from a car accident, and the next I’m working with a patient managing scoliosis or simply wanting to keep their spine healthy as they age. Between patients, I work closely with my team to make sure everyone who walks through our doors has a great experience.
Are you from this area originally, or did you settle here from somewhere else? If the latter, what brought you to this community?
I took a kind of winding road to get here. I was born in South Africa, spent part of my childhood in England, and then my family settled in Ohio, where I grew up. My wife and I moved to Northeast Florida and fell in love with it almost immediately. The quality of life, the people and the sense of community made it an easy place to put down roots. Professionally, it was a great fit too, since so many people here care about their health and staying active throughout their lives.
We’re proud to care for patients from Ponte Vedra Beach and the surrounding communities, including Nocatee, Palm Valley, Jacksonville Beach and throughout St. Johns County.
What do you like best about living here?
It’s hard to beat the lifestyle. We’ve got beautiful beaches, great weather and chances to be outdoors year-round. At the same time, Ponte Vedra still has that strong community feel, where people support local businesses and look out for their neighbors. My family and I feel incredibly blessed to be part of such a wonderful community.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Most of my free time revolves around family, friends and staying active. I love being outdoors and taking advantage of everything the area offers, whether that’s the beach, the trails or time out on the water. Running a practice keeps me busy, but I think it’s important to make time for the things that keep me healthy outside of work. And family time is at the center of it all.
What’s next for you and Ponte Vedra Spine Center?
We’re always looking for ways to serve our patients better and to keep growing, but never at the expense of what got us here in the first place. That means great care and treating people like family. My focus is on helping more people across our community live healthier, more active lives, while keeping the personal touch that has always defined Ponte Vedra Spine Center. We’re at 220 Ponte Vedra Park Drive, Suite 180, in Ponte Vedra Beach, and anyone who wants to learn more can find us at pontevedraspine.com or call us at 904-834-3060.
