Dwight “Butch” Bennett

Posted

Dwight “Butch” Bennett took his last trip around the bases on November 17, 2024, and is playing at the eternal ballpark in heaven. Butch passed away at his home in York, Maine at the age of 81 with his loving family by his side.

Butch was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina and soon found his way into a baseball dugout. He played baseball for Spartanburg, local Legion teams and Clemson University.

It all began when Butch invited Lynda on a Block S Club hayride to Rainbow Lake in South Carolina in 1960. He married his best friend and soulmate in 1963, and they were married for 60 wonderful years living in South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and finally in Maine. Butch and Lynda were blessed to have a daughter Leisa, who was the sparkle in her daddy’s eye. Butch would intently follow her swimming, cheerleading, and softball years through school and was known to shower her with surprises from time to time. He loved his baby girl. In their retirement years Butch and Lynda traveled the east coast in their RV following the grandkid’s baseball careers from Little League to College.

Butch was the co-owner of Bennett’s Crystal Ice in Jacksonville, Florida before retiring to be with his family in Maine.

In addition to his wife Lynda, Butch is survived by his daughter Leisa D. McKenna, her husband Sean M. McKenna, grandsons Justin R.  McKenna, Jordan M. McKenna, cherished little four-legged friend Emmie Sue, and several nieces and nephews. Butch is preceded in this life by his older baseball teammate and brother Gerald Bennett and his wife Betty.

If you wish to honor Butch, donations can be made to Beacon Hospice, 25 New Hampshire Avenue, Suite 272, Portsmouth, NH 03801
