The Girl Scouts of Gateway Council has announced its 2021 Gold Award recipients, one of whom is a recent graduate of Nease High School.
The council has 12 total award recipients, and four Girl Scouts are from the St. Johns County or St. Augustine area. This marks the most recipients in any county in the council.
This is the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve, and the award is given for intensive, Girl Scout-led community service projects to solve complicated challenges in their communities.
The girls from St. Johns County who have achieved the Gold Award are:
- Sidney Weber, recent Nease High School graduate. Sidney created an online community and project to help women and girls facing mental illness and depression from physical disorders. Her project was called Happiness Within Struggle.
- Charlotte Corbitt, grade 9, Creekside High School. Charlotte hand-made 345 facemasks during the COVID-19 pandemic for pediatric patients. The masks were used and distributed through the Community Hospice and Palliative Care.
- Dagny Noce, grade 12, Creekside High School. Dagny created a multi-sensory de-escalation room at her school for students in stress and crisis.
- Courtney Oko, grade 12, Creekside High School. Courtney created a program to help exceptional students learn job skills through a series of “taskboxes” she made and installed at three area St. Johns County schools’ exceptional classrooms.
The Gold Award is a key that can open doors to scholarships, preferred admission tracks for college and career opportunities. For more information, go to https://www.girlscouts.org/en/our-program/highest-awards/gold-award.html.
