Habitat for Humanity accepting applications for home ownership

Posted

Habitat for Humanity is now accepting applications for home ownership during its first quarter of open enrollment.

Interested applicants must apply by Jan. 31 and meet several requirements to qualify for ownership. Open to those who have lived or worked in St. Johns County for at least one year, the program requires applicants to demonstrate their need for a home, which could include showing that they live in an unsafe building structure, overcrowded conditions or an undesirable neighborhood. Applicants who are currently paying rent that is more than 30 percent of their monthly income also qualify.

Applicants also must demonstrate the ability to pay for mortgage payments. Habitat for Humanity determines ability to pay by reviewing the applicant’s income relative to how many people would be in the household. In addition, the organization reviews credit history to determine credit worthiness. Finally, applicants must commit to completing at least 250 “sweat equity” hours per person.

Applications are available online at http://www.habitatstjohns.org/application/ or at the organization’s office at 7 Hopkins St. in St. Augustine. They must be completed online or turned into the office by 5 p.m. Jan. 31. Contact the local team at (904) 826-3252 with questions.
