Homeless Coalition, JaxTHRIVE team up for summer art series

This summer, JaxTHRIVE volunteers are partnering with the Homeless Coalition of St. Johns County for an engaging summer art program.

They are examining the work of a variety of well-known artists with the children residing at the Coalition, providing them with a fun and educational experience.

On May 30, they focused on Vincent Van Gogh, the celebrated Dutch post-impressionist painter. They explored some of his masterpieces, including “Starry Night,” “Irises” and “Sunflowers.” The children enjoyed creating their own Van Gogh-inspired drawings and paintings, incorporating mixed media into their artwork.

During the class on June 14, they highlighted Joan Miró, the renowned Spanish painter and sculptor known for his blend of naturalism and abstraction. They studied some of his famous works, such as the “Constellations” series and “The Tilled Field.” Inspired by Miró, the students created whimsical dog and monkey renditions in his unique style.

The next JaxTHRIVE SmartART event will be held on Friday, June 28. Participants will be learning about Pablo Picasso and will create self-portraits inspired by the distinct painting styles of one of his periods.

JaxTHRIVE invites interested high school students to take part. If you are interested in participating or would like to donate art supplies, email jaxthrive@gmail.com.
