Are you looking for bold, bright blooms to bring color into your landscape? Hibiscus and hydrangea plants are great options! Both produce large, colorful flowers that stand out in garden beds and containers. Consider the sunlight and space available in your desired location as you select your new plant.
The impressive blooms of a hibiscus plant add a tropical touch to any landscape. Although these blooms only last one day, a healthy hibiscus can produce flowers constantly, particularly in the warmer months of the year. Smaller varieties of hibiscus plants grow two to three feet tall and approximately two feet wide while larger shrubs can reach heights of four to 10 feet and widths of five to eight feet.
These tropical beauties love the heat and humidity. They prefer full sun for at least six hours per day. Hibiscus plants prefer moist but well-drained soil. Water a couple times a week and/or when the top few inches of dirt around the plant feel dry. Be sure to remove old blooms from the hibiscus to encourage it to continue flowering. Hibiscus plants bloom in a variety of colors including orange, pink, red and yellow.
Hydrangea blooms are large clusters of flowers in blues, pinks and purples. These plants are available in a variety of sizes: some grow to three to five feet tall and wide while others can reach heights and widths of at least 10 feet.
Hydrangeas in Northeast Florida require shade to flourish, particularly during the afternoon sun. It is critical to water hydrangeas regularly, especially in the hottest months of the year. Be sure the soil stays moist but not waterlogged.
Hydrangeas grow best in soil that is slightly acidic. Look for fertilizers designed specifically for hydrangeas to enhance the plant’s ability to grow and bloom. Although it is best to prune hydrangea plants in the spring, be sure to remove old blooms as they fade to enhance continuous flowering.
Whether a hibiscus in full sun or a hydrangea in a shady spot, these plants produce stunning blooms that add wonderful color throughout a landscape!
Happy planting!
