Ponte Vedra girls basketball wins district title with win over Pedro Menendez


The Ponte Vedra girls basketball team defeated Pedro Menendez 58-40 on Friday, Feb. 9, to win the District 5-6A title.

Ponte Vedra’s coaching staff told the Recorder that the team was able to defeat Pedro’s constant pressure and score consistently in transition. They added that the team was patient in its half-court offense, sharing the ball and finding open players for scoring opportunities. In addition, the coaches remarked that the Sharks played great defense and shut down the opposing scorers, particularly in the third quarter. Ponte Vedra led Pedro by only one point at half time.

Channing Chappell led the Sharks with 25 points, while Leah McCarthy added 14 and Tess Tibbits chipped in 8.

Ponte Vedra next plays Belleview in the regional quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at home.
