Jake Greco, a sophomore at Ponte Vedra High School, started a fundraiser selling shirts for breast cancer awareness at his school store. The shirts are pink and feature a shark and a pink ribbon with a bite out of it. The shirt says, “Ponte Vedra Sharks Take A Bite Out Of Cancer.”
When asked what inspired him to start a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness, Jake said, “There are women all over the world that are struggling with the battle for breast cancer, so I started this fundraiser to help those women by providing money to research and even a possible cure.”
His mom, Corrine Greco, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2019.
“At the time, my oldest son, Jake, was just 9 years old, and my middle son, Jaxson, was 6,” she said. “Only six days later, I learned I was pregnant with my youngest, Jaden.”
Corrine endured chemotherapy throughout her pregnancy and after the birth of her youngest, as well as several major surgeries all while raising her three children. Despite everything, Corrine has refused to lose hope and stays strong for her family.
Corrine shared how Jake’s fundraiser has impacted her.
“I have been honored to watch Jake take this step — not only to support me, but to stand for his teachers, his community and all women facing breast cancer,” she said. “His heart shines through this fundraiser, and it’s his quiet way of showing the strength and compassion he has carried since the day I got sick.”
All profits from the shirts go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).
“This fundraiser helped me realize the importance of what I was doing because it was able to help someone in need,” Jake said. “It showed me that you don’t need a lot to help, only have a helping mindset.”
Corrine’s resilience and Jake’s heart for helping others continues to be a beacon of hope in the community.
