On May 11, The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida Emergency Disaster Services team served lunch to approximately 100 Florida Army and Air National Guard troops during the Florida Air National Guard disaster preparation exercise, held at the Camp Blanding Joint Training Grounds in Clay County.
The 72,000-acre Camp Blanding Joint Training Center is the Florida National Guard's premier training installation and is located near Starke.
The week of May 10-16 marked National Salvation Army Week and Hurricane Preparedness Week. The Salvation Army partnered with the training center in observance of both events.
“Thank you to Major Melissa Rudd, National Guard liaison officer, for including The Salvation Army as we are always in support of the Army’s service to our state,” said Robert Devers, development director for The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida.
The Salvation Army has been involved in every major disaster recovery since 1905. June 1 marks the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, and The Salvation Army of Jacksonville is seeking volunteers to join its Emergency Disaster Services team.
Before a disaster strikes, The Salvation Army needs a team of trained volunteers on standby ready to respond to an emergency. Its disaster training program offers a variety of courses designed to help individuals and communities prepare for emergency events and become trained disaster volunteers.
Those interested in becoming a disaster volunteer can begin the application process at https://disaster.salvationarmyusa.org/volunteer/new.
After completing the online application, applicants’ information will be shared with The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida.
