The St. Augustine Amphitheatre’s Front Porch will host a free, four-part environmental film series beginning next month, with periodic documentary screenings running through October.
Part of the amphitheatre’s Green Hands Initiative, the St. Augustine EcoCinema is presented in partnership with the St. Augustine Film Society, The Golden Way and Beaches Go Green. All four screening events are free and open to the public through sponsorships made by the Friends of the St. Augustine Amphitheatre (FOSAA) and Maritime Creative. Free parking will also be available for the film screenings, each of which will be followed by question and answer sessions with local organizations.
Kicking off the series on Tuesday, April 7 will be “Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” a multiple award-winning independent documentary that chronicles Angela Sun’s personal journey of discovery to one of the most remote places on Earth, Midway Atoll, to uncover the truth behind the mystery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
On Tuesday, June 16, the St. Augustine EcoCinema will feature two documentaries addressing rising sea levels: “Sinking Cities: Miami” and “The Oldest City Underwater.” “Sinking Cities: Miami” is one of four “Sinking Cities” episodes exploring how global cities are coming to grips with the real-time effects of rising seas and extreme weather. “The Oldest City Underwater” addresses rising water levels within St. Augustine.
“Wasted! The Story of Food Waste” will be the featured documentary presented Tuesday, August 4. This Anthony Bourdain-produced documentary aims to change the way people buy, cook, recycle, and eat food. Through the eyes of chefs, audiences will see how the world’s most influential chefs make the most of every kind of food, transforming what most people consider scraps into incredible dishes that create a more secure food system.
The series will conclude Tuesday, October 6 with “Blue,” a documentary that delves into how industrial-scale fishing, habitat destruction, species loss and pollution have placed the ocean in peril.
The Front Porch at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre is located at 1340C A1A South in St. Augustine.
