Summer camp aims to introduce next generation to croquet

Summer camps and sports just seem to go together and there are so many sports out there to pick from but perhaps one of the more unique camps being offered is through the Ponte Vedra Croquet Club.

The club will host two separate four-week camps with the first beginning June 10 and the second set to start July 8.

The camp will hold sessions three days a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. each day.

Children middle school and high school ages are welcome to attend the camp, which will be tailored to help teach the sport of croquet while learning not only the basics but the different techniques with which to play the game.

One of the benefits of the camp is that not only will campers have instruction during the three days each week but they and their families will also have access to the club so they can come and play on the grounds with club members at any point during the four-week camp period.

The price is $250 to take part in the four-week camp and receive club access during that time. All equipment used will be provided by the club and campers are asked to wear comfortable athletic wear.

Instructors during the camp will include John Currington, who founded the Ponte Vedra Croquet Club and is a member of the Croquet Hall of Fame; Helen Covington, who is the No. 1-ranked female croquet player in the U.S.; and Anita Huber, who is a member of the club and has been playing croquet for nearly a decade.

The Ponte Vedra Croquet Club is located behind PVPV/Rawlings Elementary School at 100 Mosquito Control Road off of State Road A1A.
