Jacksonville Dance Theatre (JDT) and the Florida State College at Jacksonville Dance Department have announced the return of the week-long summer intensive, SHAPE/SHIFT, for professional and pre-professional dancers ages 16 and up, July 27-31, at FSCJ South Campus.
This year’s intensive highlights the continued collaboration between danceWORKS, FSCJ’s dance repertory company, and JDT. Through this partnership, SHAPE/SHIFT participants gain access to a uniquely integrated training environment where collegiate dancers, emerging artists and working professionals learn sidebyside. The collaboration strengthens the pipeline between FSCJ’s academic dance program and Jacksonville’s professional dance community, offering participants a rare opportunity to experience how concert dance is created, rehearsed and performed across both educational and professional settings.
SHAPE/SHIFT is a five-day deep dive into contemporary modern dance techniques and an exploration of composition, improvisation and choreography, culminating in a publicly staged performance. The immersive experience is led by JDT Artistic Director and FSCJ Director of Dance Rebecca R. Levy, along with resident JDT choreographers and dancers and a slate of special guest instructors and choreographers.
“The teaching, atmosphere and care from instructors was excellent all around,” said a SHAPE/SHIFT 2025 participant. “I appreciated the educational approach the instructors brought into their teaching. It is important to be taught about dance, as well as how to dance. Each instructor was intentional and kind, and I felt cared for as a dancer and person.”
Registration for the full week is $550 per participant, with payment in full due by July 15 to secure a spot. Daily sessions are held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a site-specific performance will be held Friday, July 31, at the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts.
“SHAPE/SHIFT invites professional and pre-professional dancers into a process of exploration where rigorous training supports the development of an authentic artistic voice,” said Levy. “It is a space to engage physically while deepening clarity, confidence and intention as an artist.”
Limited scholarships are available for artists in need of financial support. Spaces are limited and early registration is encouraged to secure a spot.
