United Way of St. Johns County is seeking donations for its annual Empty Stocking Fund, which provides food, clothing and gifts to hundreds of local families in need each year.
Support for the fund is particularly important this year, the organization says, because the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted thousands of local families, many of whom have never before found themselves needing any form of assistance.
“As we approach the holidays, many of us understand more than ever how important food security is to an at-risk child or a senior citizen,” said United Way-SJC Board Chair Beverly Slough. “Many of our neighbors are facing fears surrounding the holidays that could not have been anticipated. The Empty Stocking Fund has a tradition of offering comfort during what should be a time of joy.”
Through the Empty Stocking Fund, the United Way-SJC will distribute funds, food and other assistance in collaboration with other nonprofits, including The Salvation Army, St. Johns County Fire Rescue, the St. Johns County School District, CareConnect, Pie in the Sky, Council on Aging and more.
Supported by community donations since the 1980s, the Empty Stocking Fund assists vulnerable children and fragile seniors with funds for food, clothing or toys at the holidays. Tax-deductible donations are fully distributed. Last year, $104,000 in donations brightened the holidays for more than 550 families and seniors.
