The U.S. Coast Guard's Vessel Safety Check (VSC) Program began in 1947 as a proactive effort to promote recreational boating safety. Originally known as the Courtesy Marine Examination (CME), the program was launched in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, a volunteer organization supporting many of the U.S. Coast Guard's non-military missions.
On a Saturday this month, in St. Augustine, the Flotilla’s VSC Program celebrates this cornerstone of recreational boating safety in our local area.
Stop by Vilano Landings Saturday, Aug. 23, with your vessel, be it canoe, paddle board or trailered recreational boat of any size up to 65 feet in length. The trained and certified examiners will check your boat’s safety equipment and discuss the new regulations to stay safe on the water all year long at a free, no obligation Vessel Safety Check.
Boaters can also schedule their own VSC anywhere in the country, conducted by a vessel examiner nearest to them, at a more convenient time. See the USCG Auxiliary web page at wow.uscgaux.info/i_want_a_vsc/index.php.
