As part of a continued partnership, the St. Johns Cultural Council and St. Johns County are expanding the Art in Public Spaces program to include the Health & Human Services Building. The expansion will begin with an opportunity for photographers to capture the image of veterans.
There is no better time to recognize our servicemen and women, as the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps celebrate their 250th anniversaries in 2025, and the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026.
VFW Post 2391 and member Rick McAllister (writer, photographer, VFW life member, First City Honor Guard and Vietnam combat veteran) initially reached out to the St. Johns Cultural Council with the idea. The St. Johns Cultural Council, St. Johns County, St. Johns County Health & Human Services and Veterans’ Services were unanimously in favor of the concept and support this intersection of art, community and honoring veterans.
Local, regional and national artists were invited to submit up to three of their original photos that contain an image of a veteran and an American flag. A jury will select 25 works for “Stories of American Veterans” to be displayed in the reFRAME Gallery at the St. Johns County Health & Human Services Building, 200 San Sebastian View, St. Augustine.
The opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the St. Johns County Health & Human Services Building. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and meet the talented photographers and veterans.
At 1 p.m. Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, the top three winners and Best of Show award will be announced at the VFW Post 2391, 6184 U.S. 1 S, St. Augustine.
