The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation’s (MWYF) annual Current/Sherman Group of Merrill Lynch Champions For Children Gala, presented by Florida Blue, raised $323,000 to benefit the foundation’s afterschool and summer camp programs for underprivileged youth in Jacksonville’s urban core.

The foundation’s vision is that the young people in the program will have the resources they need to rise to their full potential and become contributing members of society. The Oct. 24 gala brought together more than 300 community leaders and supporters of that vision.

Attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception, a live and silent auction, engaging games, dinner and student and alumni testimonials highlighting the life-changing impact of MWYF’s programs.

MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation has been empowering Jacksonville’s youth for more than 28 years, offering essential resources to help students succeed in school, build resilience and thrive both in and out of the classroom. The funds raised at this year’s gala will allow MWYF to continue providing academic support, life skills workshops, enrichment activities, counseling, mentoring and college-and-career preparation for hundreds of students each year.

“The incredible support from the Champions For Children Gala ensures that we can continue offering programs that help our students unlock their potential and create a brighter future for themselves and their families,” said MWYF Founder MaliVai Washington. “Every dollar raised strengthens our ability to serve Jacksonville’s youth, helping them build the skills, confidence and resilience they need to become successful adults.”

The afterschool and summer programs provide a safe and nurturing environment for at-risk students in Jacksonville’s urban core. By focusing on academics, social-emotional development and personal growth, MWYF is equipping youth with tools they can use to break the cycle of poverty and achieve their goals.
