A Classic Theatre to celebrate award-winning playwrights

A Classic Theatre is beginning a new season of shows dedicated to works by award-winning playwrights.

Showcasing a diverse collection of acclaimed plays, the season promises compelling characters, thought-provoking themes and unforgettable theatrical experiences that celebrate the best in contemporary theatre.

With a reputation for being “small but mighty,” A Classic Theatre is a community theatre with a professional approach. Established in 2007 by Jean Rahner and Anne Kraft, the original founders of The Limelight Theatre, ACT has seen many changes over its almost two decades and has been improving and growing exponentially.

Initially a bit of a nomadic company, the past five years have given ACT a more permanent home at The Waterworks, and an increase in the amount of shows it presents. The productions feature talented local performers alongside experienced directors and creative teams dedicated to bringing each production to life with imagination and authenticity.

They take great pride in having a relatively small “working board of directors” where everyone is hands-on with some aspect of all of the productions they present. This commitment makes ACT a tightly knit family that is able to overcome whatever challenges it faces in putting together a production, all the while not compromising their vision. While this is a small group, ACT is always seeking volunteers from all walks of life to join them in the creation of their productions, with a wide variety of opportunities in which to help.

The carefully curated 2026-27 season reflects ACT’s ongoing commitment to presenting exceptional theatre that entertains, challenges and inspires.

The playwrights featured in this upcoming season, Bess Wohl, (“Grand Horizons”), Christopher Durang (“Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike”), Sarah Ruhl (“Dead Man’s Cell Phone”) and Steven Dietz (“Becky’s New Car”), have earned the top awards in their craft, including the Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize, Drama Desk Award, among others.

Together, these works represent a broad spectrum of voices, styles and perspectives. Each production invites audiences to see the world through different perspectives while celebrating shared emotions and relatable experiences.

“Our goal has always been to present plays that resonate with audiences long after the production ends,” said Artistic Director Cindy Alexander.

Part of that overall goal is to try as much as possible to keep ticket prices low in an effort to make it more affordable for everyone in the community to experience live theatre.

In addition to the celebrated playwrights, ACT’s Staged Readings series, which has proven very popular since it was introduced three seasons ago, will this season feature brand new, never-before produced plays culled from more than 300 submissions by playwrights around the country. The Staged Readings Series is presented at the Center for Spiritual Living, one night only for each show. The main productions span two weekends with Friday performances at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

With a season built around celebrated playwrights and exceptional storytelling, A Classic Theatre invites both longtime patrons and first-time visitors to experience the magic of a live theatrical performance.
