The Gospel of St. Matthew will receive a rockin’ contemporary spin when Apex Theatre Studio mounts its production of Godspell on Friday, Aug.5 and Saturday, Aug. 6 at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall.

An instant hit when it was produced off Broadway in 1971, Godspell offers a variety of musical styles and theatrical formats to make the Gospel of St. Matthew accessible to today’s audiences. Its much-loved score includes the hits “Day By Day” and “Prepare Ye The Way.”

“We had such a phenomenal response to the production last summer,” Artistic Director Ian Mairs said. “It was clear to us that we needed to provide the artists and the community with more opportunities to experience the show.”

Mairs created the Summer Musical Theatre Intensive along with vocal coach Matt Morgan, to provide a select group of theater students with the opportunity to receive advanced-level training. The cast includes students from the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Stanton College Preparatory School and Bartram Trail High school.

Apex Theatre Studio’s production of Godspell will be performed on Friday, Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. For more information, visit www.pvconcerthall.com.
