Special to the Recorder
Ponte Vedra played host to Terry Parker last Wednesday in the first round of the softball regional playoffs and the visitors were no match for the red-hot Sharks. Ponte Vedra dispatched Parker 12-1 in a game halted after five innings by the mercy rule.
The Sharks scored early and often, leading 6-0 after two innings. Consecutive base hits by Scotland David, Michelle Leone, Quinlan Richmond, Farley Callaghan and Bailey Wagoner’s two-RBI single netted three runs in the first.
David’s double, Quinlan’s single and Callaghan’s home run in the second scored three more, and Ponte Vedra had all the runs they would need with their ace Michelle Holder pitching. The Sharks’ sophomore pitcher was on her game, striking out six in five innings although an error, a walk and a wild pitch spoiled her shutout bid but not her no-hitter.
Wagoner’s RBI double in the fourth followed by Richmond’s RBI single, Callaghan’s RBI single – her third base hit of the game – and Kiley Hennessey’s two-RBI single in the fifth produced the Sharks’ twelfth run, ending the game.
