USA Today names St. Augustine Distillery ‘Best Craft Gin Distillery’

St. Augustine Distillery has been named Best Craft Gin Distillery in the United States in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest. It was one of 20 distilleries from around the country nominated by a panel of industry experts, including Brian Christensen from Artisan Spirit Magazine and Olivier Ward from Gin Foundry.

“We are honored to have been included in such a well-respected group of craft distilleries,” said Philip McDaniel, co-founder and CEO of St. Augustine Distillery. “Like us, many of these distilleries work in small batches, using traditional techniques and are working hard doing what they love. We are proud to be able to take this recognition home to our employees.”

St. Augustine Distillery’s New World Gin has garnered attention for the artisanal distillery located in downtown St. Augustine, including gold medals in the 2016 Los Angeles International Spirits Competition, 2015 American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) Competition and 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It was also named “Best Gin of the South” in Southern Living magazine’s Food Awards.

“It’s always nice to receive validation that if you create a high-quality spirit using locally sourced ingredients, people take notice,” said McDaniel. “We feel that we hit the mark with our New World Gin, a beautiful spirit that is evocative of Florida and makes spectacular cocktails.”

Northeast Florida’s first Kiddie Academy holds ground breaking

A groundbreaking ceremony for Northeast Florida’s first Kiddie Academy was held Sept. 19 at the new site located off Racetrack Road one block west of US 1.

According to owners Rita and Joe Geronimo, the $2.3 million, 10,000 square-foot facility is expected to open in 2017. When completed, Kiddie Academy will serve up to 170 children between the ages of 6 and 12 and have a staff of 20.

After relocating to the Nocatee area in 2013, the Geronimos said they noticed a demand for child care with the growth happening in the area.

“When I started looking into the different child care options in the market, I was very impressed with Kiddie Academy’s focus on education,” Rita Geronimo said. “The programs also emphasize continuous, open communication between teachers and parents concerning each child’s development.”

Geronimo added that while the child care center wouldn’t open until next spring, it will be accepting applications for children to attend – and will offer a $100 tuition credit to the first 50 families to sign up as part of its “FirstFamilies Program.” For registration information, call (904) 466-8477 or email stjohns@kiddieacademy.net.
