Butterfield to feature award-winning surrealist artist

Victor Caruncho is the featured artist for month of March at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery.

Victor Caruncho’s award-winning art is a modern take on Surrealism and the surrealist masters by infusing thought-provoking images with sparks of humor, transforming each work into a conversation piece.

Honoring the likes of the surreal masters Dali and Magritte, Caruncho’s works poke fun at everyday life in odd depictions of familiar objects in bizarre context. Painting images that make you think, with hidden meanings or simply no meaning at all! His refined technique requires the finest textured canvases combined with water-based pure pigment for a unique quality, with added vibrancy and saturation to the colors.

New York-born and self-taught, Caruncho has an overwhelming passion for the arts. Painting and drawing was evident from an early age and, growing up in a family of artists, he was surrounded by the works of the Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Dali, Magritte and along with his favorite, Caravaggio — all of whom have shaped his career.

After high school, Caruncho wanted to pursue his dreams of art. He was accepted to the prestigious School of Visual Arts (SVA) in Manhattan, New York City, but due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, he was not able to attend.

After years working odd jobs the opportunity came to enroll in Plaza School of Architectural Drafting and Design located in New Jersey, where he honed his skills in architectural hand drafting. While producing work for many established architectural and engineering firms, Caruncho never abandoned his true passion of artistic expression.

“Drawing and painting will never cease from my veins, it’s in my blood!” he says.

With the advent of technology, Caruncho left the world of architecture and engineering to start his own successful business as a decorative faux painter and artisan. His business thrived completing many projects, accomplishing many faux finishes for homes and businesses and especially an abundance of murals and decorative designs. Fine art canvas work was also in full effect.

Caruncho’s unique look upon the world eminently shows in almost all aspects of his works from diverse architectural designs to fabulous wall finishes and to his surprisingly different and separate views at everyday objects which are highly visible in all of his fine art pieces.

Caruncho’s other interests include health, fitness and bodybuilding and a love for the human form, music, playing guitar and spending time with his family.

Caruncho’s exhibit opens on First Friday Art Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, 137 King St., St. Augustine.
