Florida’s Tim Tebow to headline Wildflower Healthcare Gala

Posted

Tim Tebow will definitely bring star power to Wildflower Healthcare’s second annual Gift of Health Gala, but according to Executive Director Chris Mastoridis, Tebow was invited to be featured speaker because his message to help others and mission to help children aligns with the vision of the local nonprofit.

The former University of Florida quarterback and Heisman trophy winner will share his commitment to faith, hope and love at the fundraiser from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7 at Embassy Suites Oceanfront Resort in St. Augustine Beach.

Mastoridis said proceeds will help reach 2020 goals to provide services to St. Johns County residents that cannot be funded through grants. For example, grant money cannot be earmarked for dentures, which can provide confidence needed to secure a job that requires face-to-face interaction with customers.

“We want to help people and help the economy,” Mastoridis said.

Wildflower Healthcare has been in St. Johns County for 24 years. While the nonprofit is perceived as predominantly helping the homeless, Mastoridis said less than 3% of patients are homeless and many work in the hospitality industry. Most cannot afford to miss work because of illness like the flu. Most insurance provides free flu shots, but those who are uninsured or underinsured likely have to pay. In a partnership with Flagler Health+, six free popup flu clinics were held at strategic locations throughout the county, intended to help people remain healthy so they did not miss work during flu season.

“Just over 600 immunizations were given at the first four clinics,” Mastoridis said. He anticipated close to 100 people at the Hastings flu clinic.

Since taking the executive director role at the end of May, Mastoridis has looked for ways to convert the clinic from urgent care to primary care, making preventive care accessible to the uninsured or underinsured in St. Johns County. He is also seeking ways to access people on the western side of the county. One proposal is to purchase a van to transport people to the services.

Gala proceeds will directly support Wildflower Healthcare’s general fund. Individual tickets include an auction and silent auction. Sponsorships are available at a variety of levels and Platinum Level sponsors will enjoy a VIP meet and greet with Tebow and autographed memorabilia.
