Grant kicks off another year of historic presentations

Local historian and speaker Scott Grant gave his first presentation of 2022 on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Nocatee Hall.

In “The Beatles Come to Florida,” Grant tells the story of John, Paul, George and Ringo on their first U.S. tour. The Beatles made two trips to Florida as a group, both in 1964.

That year, the Fab Four frolicked in Miami enjoying the beach, Florida girls and yachts. On the cusp of worldwide celebrity, the band members met a young Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), unknowingly creating an iconic photoshoot.

The second trip, this one to Jacksonville, tells a more serious story. The Beatles struck a blow for civil rights insisting that the Jacksonville Gator Bowl be de-segregated for the first time.

Going forward, Grant is scheduled to speak on the following topics:

  • “The Night Nazis Invaded The First Coast” — 11:30 a.m. Jan. 20 for members of guests of The Sons of the American Revolution at Ramada Inn, 3130 Hartley Road, Jacksonville.
  • “Memorial Ceremony for the S.S. Gulfamerica” — 11 a.m. April 10 at Oceanfront Park, 429 1st St. S., Jacksonville Beach.
  • “The Beatles Come to Florida” — 6 p.m. April 28 at 984 Old Mill Run, The Villages, Florida.
  • “The Night Nazis Invaded The First Coast” — 11 a.m. May 4 for the Newcomers Alumnae Group at 25655 Marsh Landing Parkway, Ponte Vedra Beach.
  • “The Beatles Come to Florida.” Date to be announced. At the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada, Florida.

Other topics Grant speaks on include “From Molly Hatchet to Burning Bras — 150 years of Women’s Empowerment,” “The Summer of ’64,” “How to Invest like a Millionaire” and more.
