James Edward “Ed” Newton, 88, died peacefully at McGraw Community Hospice of Jacksonville Jan. 24, 2018, following a battle with congestive heart failure.

Ed was born in Columbus, Georgia, Oct. 13, 1929. He is the youngest son of the late Helen Mullino Newton and Russell Brown Newton. He graduated from The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Ed served in the United States Navy as a naval intelligence officer during the Korean War, and attended The Wharton School of Business. He was an avid golfer, an accomplished pilot and loved politics, finance and, most of all, family. 

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joan Crumley Newton; son, James Edward Newton Jr.; daughter, Caroline Newton Smith; three grandchildren, Hunter Locke Newton, Reese Matthew Newton and Margaret Olivia Smith; and his eldest brother, Russell Brown Newton Jr. He was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Mullino Newton.
