Citrus trees
Ever wonder what type of citrus trees thrive in Northeast Florida? Growing citrus is not only great for fresh fruit, but they are beautiful ornate trees with a wonderful scent. All citrus trees in this region require a minimum of six hours of sunlight or more. They also require more water than most trees no matter if the weather is hot or cold. Dwarf trees are suited for smaller yards and spaces, whereas a big yard may have many large citrus trees. Fertilizing with specific citrus fertilizer quarterly is key to the success of these trees growing in our zone. Here are some of the most popular in our area:
Meyer Lemon, Persian Lime, Tangerine, Valencia Orange, Ponderosa Lemon, Key Lime, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Calamondin, Mandarin Orange and Cocktail Citrus tree.
A Cocktail Citrus tree is grafted with three to five fruits, including orange, grapefruit, lemons, and limes. It’s a great option if you only need one citrus tree in your landscaping but want to have multiple fruits. Fun fact: Each year, the Cocktail Citrus tree can bear different fruits than the year before.
Now that the weather is warming up, it’s a perfect time to purchase citrus.
