Local resident breaks curling world record in powerlifting competition

Stu Levin, 75, set a new world record in the strict curl event at the American Challenge Powerlifting Championships in North Carolina. The strict curl requires the lifter to keep the shoulders and lower body in contact with a wall to prevent the athlete from hoisting, rocking or scooping the weight during performance of the exercise. Levin is an esophageal cancer survivor who competes in the 165-pound weight class and the 75-79-year-old age group. His lift of 42 kilograms (92.5 pounds) was five pounds over the previous world record set eight years ago. Levin trains at the Ponte Vedra YMCA and is a member of American Legion Post 129 in Jacksonville Beach.
