Nease NJROTC wins Drone and Brain Brawl Championships

Posted

Competing simultaneously in two separate championships, Nease NJROTC adopted a divide and conquer philosophy by sweeping both the academic Brain Brawl Championship and Drone Challenge Championship at Bishop Kenny High School on Feb. 22.

Brain Brawls are similar to Jeopardy contests, with teams ringing in the fastest and with the correct answer scoring points. Teams compete in qualifying rounds, with the top four advancing to the finals.

Nease topped the 20 teams vying for first place honors.

“The finals were intense,” said team captain Ben Prohofsky. “We were trailing the whole time before rallying in the final minute to pull out the win.”

Team members included cadets Elkhan Bagirov, Benjamin Prohofsky, Brody Mongon, Isabella Rivera and Daniel Mahoney.

The team will next compete at the Area-12 Northern Florida - Georgia Championships on Feb. 29 at Clay High School.

Just down the hall from the brain brawl, Nease competed in its first ever Drone Challenge competition. And after the final results were posted, Nease came out on top as overall champions. Drone Challenge competitions involve four individual events maneuvering the drones with speed and precision through a series of tight obstacles.

Winning team members included cadets Dylan Dosio, Braden Holmes, Jordan Mayberry and Daniel Mahoney.

Nease is presently ranked as the #1 program in NJROTC Area 12 (59 school region that covers northern Florida and the state of Georgia).
