Oakleaf band marches away with four first-place awards at competition

Ponte Vedra first in two categories

FLEMING ISLAND – The Oakleaf High School marching band of Orange Park won Grand Champion honors with four first-place awards and two seconds to become one of eight to qualify for the state championships at the Fleming Island Golden Eagle Classic Marching Band Competition on Oct. 9.

The Golden Regiment won ensemble, general effect and visual team competitions, while Ponte Vedra High School’s marching band finished second in all three categories.

The Nease High School marching band was third, and Orange Park finished fourth.

Ponte Vedra finished first in the percussion and color guard categories, while Oakleaf finished second. Oakleaf also finished first in the drum major competition. Nease was third in all three of those categories.

The top two teams in each classification will advance to the Florida Marching Band Championships at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, to be held on Nov. 20-21.
