Ponte Vedra High School will present “Red,” the electrifying Tony Award-winning play about art, ego and creation by John Logan, in an upcoming theatrical production featuring Jason Nettle as legendary abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and Charlie Pennella as his assistant, Ken.
Set inside Rothko’s New York studio in the late 1950s, “Red” explores the volatile creative relationship between a master artist at the height of his fame and the ambitious young assistant who challenges his beliefs. As the two clash over art, philosophy, money and meaning, the play becomes an intense and intimate portrait of artistic legacy and the cost of greatness.
Nettle brings commanding presence to the role of Rothko, capturing the painter’s genius, arrogance and vulnerability, while Pennella’s portrayal of Ken injects youthful energy and intellectual fire into the production. Together, their performances drive a fast-paced, emotionally charged dialogue that examines what it means to create something that lasts.
Directed by Ponte Vedra High School’s Jocelyn Smith, this production highlights the school’s continued commitment to ambitious, thought-provoking theatre that challenges both performers and audiences. With its mature themes, sharp wit and visual power, “Red” offers a rare opportunity to experience a modern theatrical classic in an intimate setting.
Performances are at 7 p.m. Feb. 26-28 at the Ponte Vedra High School theatre. To purchase tickets in advance, go to Teachtix.com/pvhs/red.
